I'm Rob, the owner, shaper, and board builder behind Rob Lan Surfboards.
I grew up in Brooklyn, New York, where surfing felt like a world away. As a kid, I spent my time skateboarding and riding anything with wheels, but I always dreamed about surfing. It wasn't until I met my partner, who grew up surfing in Asbury Park, that I finally paddled into my first waves. Around that same time, she surprised me with a Build Your Own Surfboard Kit. Looking back, it's funny that I decided to build a surfboard before I really knew how to surf, but that project completely changed the direction of my life.
Eight years ago, I moved to the North Shore of Oʻahu, where I immersed myself in surfboard building. In the beginning, I shaped and glassed boards anywhere I could make space: our garage, lanai, guest room, backyard, and carport, while fulfilling custom orders and figuring things out one board at a time. Eventually, I earned a position at Murray Glassing in the historic Old Waialua Sugar Mill, where I've had the opportunity to sand and do color work for some of surfing's most respected shapers while continuing to grow my own label.
Living and working on Oʻahu has had a huge influence on the way I build boards. Every mentor I've worked alongside has shaped my craftsmanship, but my designs are inspired by the incredible variety of waves around the island. I love building alternative surfboards that feel fast, playful, and versatile in all kinds of conditions.
One of the things that motivates me most is community. Growing up in Brooklyn, I didn't know anyone who surfed or built surfboards, and breaking into the sport felt nearly impossible. Today, I'm incredibly grateful to be surrounded by a community that's welcomed me into this craft. Whether it's working alongside talented builders, sharing ideas with other shapers, or connecting with surfers through events and collaborations, I never take for granted how much this industry is built on people helping one another learn and grow.
Along the way, I've been fortunate to have my work recognized as a finalist in Vissla's Just Add Color competition in 2025, earn 2nd Place – Best in Show at the 2025 Boardroom Show, and serve as a Shaper in Residence at House of Somos.
At the end of the day, I just love making surfboards. Every board that leaves my shop is built with the same excitement I had when I opened that very first surfboard kit years ago. Thanks for following along, and I hope we get the chance to build something together.
